As business consultants with over 50 years of combined experience, we have found that many business owners fail to reach their personal and professional goals. The following story captures the essence of our experience working with a typical business owner.

I am sitting in a meeting with my client reviewing the company financial statements and doing some tax planning. He is enjoying a successful and profitable year and is very pleased with our work. Our relationship could not be better – a win-win situation for everybody. I ease back in my chair and ask him how things are going with his business and his life. A look of pain comes over his face as he opens up to me and shares his feelings of frustration with the lack of time he is spending with his family. He is missing his kids grow up and his wife complains about all the hours he works. His business is not where he thought it would be at this time and the business will not run without him. In a nutshell, his business is sucking the life out of him and he’s looking to me for guidance!

Now, there are only two things going through my mind at this point. The first is that with all my business training and experience, being a CPA and all, I did not have a clue how to respond to his plea for help. Secondly, my client was also describing my business and my life! I have the same problems he has – I work too many hours, my business has grown out of control and if I am not in the office working, there is no business!

It’s a wonderful, insightful book on the current state of most small businesses in America. Ironically, I completely identified with the business owner described in his book – he was writing about me! I flew to California, met Mr. Gerber, became a Certified E-Myth Consultant and I now coach business owners through the E-Myth Business Mastery Program.
